Satellite Radio: Available Systems
Satellite radio is a very new entertainment industry. Within the last few years, two new services - XM Radio and Sirius Satellite Radio - have started to offer commercial-free music and information channels on a subscription basis.
XM Radio was the first, and the largest provider, with over 3 million current subscribers, Sirius just reached the 1 million subscriber mark.
Both systems provide 60+ channels of music ranging from pop/rock to country and classical as well as many channels featuring very specific music genres. The information channels include news from industry leaders, talk, weather, sports and traffic. These services cover all of the programming currently available on broadcast radio, but in a commercial-free and digital format.
XM Radio features many sports channels, and has lined up Major League Baseball for 2005. Sirius has an exclusive contract for broadcasting the NFL and as widely publicized, will be soon featuring the Howard Stern show.
XM Radio subscriptions now cost $12.95/month (up from $9.99/month) and is the same as that charged by Sirius at $12.95/month. See our Cost of Subscriptions section for a complete comparison.
